Privacy Policy
Last updated 20 September 2026
Pickovie is a swipe-based app for deciding what to watch. This policy explains exactly what the app collects, why it needs it, who else sees it, and how to get rid of it.
The short version
- You can use Pickovie without giving us an email address. The app signs you in anonymously on first launch.
- We collect what the app needs to work: your taste preferences, your swipes, your lists and your duo. We also collect analytics and crash reports so we can fix what breaks.
- We do not sell your data, and we do not use it for advertising.
- You can delete your account and everything attached to it from inside the app, at any time.
Who we are
Pickovie (“we”, “us”) operates the Pickovie mobile app and pickovie.app. For any privacy question, or to exercise the rights below, email support@pickovie.app.
What we collect
Account
On first launch the app creates an anonymous account. It is a random identifier, with no name, email or phone number attached. If you later choose to add an email address so your data survives a reinstall or moves to a new device, we store that email address and send one-time sign-in codes to it. We never store a password, because there isn’t one.
Profile
A display name and a profile picture, if you set them. A profile picture you choose is uploaded to our storage and is visible to people you share a duo with.
What you tell us about your taste
The vibes, genres and streaming services you pick during onboarding or later change in settings, plus any filters you set.
Your age
During onboarding we ask which age bracket you fall into: 13–17, 18–24, 25–34, 35–49 or 50+. We use it to tune your recommendations. We store only the bracket; we do not ask for, and never store, your date of birth.
If you tell us you are under 13, we do not store it. The anonymous account that device had started is deleted immediately and the app stops there. See Children below.
What you do in the app
- Your swipes on titles, whether you liked, passed or had already seen them, and when you made each one.
- Titles you save to a list, the folders you sort them into, and anything you mark as watched, with the rating you gave it.
- Duos you create or join, who is in them, the invite code, and the titles you and your partner both liked.
- Activity counters used for streaks, and the time you last opened the app.
Your swipes are the raw material for the recommendations. They are turned into a mathematical “taste vector” used to rank titles for you. In a duo, yours is combined with your partner’s to rank titles for the two of you.
Device and technical data
- A push notification token from Apple or Google, but only if you allow notifications. It lets us tell you about a new match or a partner’s activity. It identifies the app install, not you.
- Your device’s region and language setting, used to show the right age ratings and streaming availability.
- Device model, OS version, app version and IP address, collected by our analytics and crash-reporting providers.
Photos
If you set a profile picture, the app asks for access to your photo library. We receive only the single image you choose. We never browse, scan or upload anything else, and the app does not use your camera.
What we do not collect
We do not collect precise location, contacts, health data, browsing history outside the app, or payment card details. Pickovie is free and contains no advertising.
Why we use it
We process your data to provide the app you asked for: to run your account, build your recommendations, keep your lists and duos working, and to fix the app when it breaks. We do not sell it, we do not share it for cross-context behavioural advertising, and we run no advertising at all.
Push notifications and photo library access are separate. You grant those at the OS prompt and can withdraw either in your device settings at any time, without losing your account.
If you happen to be in the UK or EEA, our lawful bases under the UK/EU GDPR are performance of a contract for everything needed to run the app, legitimate interests for analytics, crash reporting and preventing abuse, and consent for notifications and photo access.
Who we share it with
We use the following processors. They handle data on our instructions and are not permitted to use it for their own purposes.
| Provider | What it does | What it sees |
|---|---|---|
| Supabase | Database, authentication, file storage | Your account, profile, preferences, swipes, lists and duos |
| PostHog | Product analytics | In-app events, a session identifier, device/OS/app version, IP address |
| Sentry | Crash and error reporting | Crash stack traces, device/OS, your user identifier, IP address |
| Expo, Apple, Google | Push notification delivery | Your push token and the notification contents |
| Resend | Sending sign-in codes | Your email address, if you added one |
| Vercel | Website and our film-data proxy | Standard server request logs |
Film and TV information comes from The Movie Database (TMDB). The app does not talk to TMDB directly. Requests go through our own server, so TMDB does not receive your device’s IP address or any information about you.
We will also disclose data where we are legally required to, and we may transfer it as part of a merger or acquisition, in which case this policy continues to apply until you are told otherwise.
Where your data is held
Pickovie is operated from the United States, and your data is stored and processed there. Some of our providers also operate facilities in the European Union. If you use Pickovie from outside the United States, you are sending your data to the United States, where privacy law differs from your own; for UK and EEA users those transfers rely on Standard Contractual Clauses or an adequacy decision.
How long we keep it
- Account and activity data: until you delete your account.
- Anonymous accounts that are never upgraded and stop being used: cleaned up periodically, along with everything attached to them.
- Analytics and crash data: retained by those providers on a rolling basis, generally up to 12 months.
Deleting your account
In the app, open Profile → Account & settings → Account Info → Delete Account. This permanently removes your profile, preferences, swipes, lists, watched titles, duo memberships, matches, push token and login, in a single step. It cannot be undone. If you would rather we did it for you, email support@pickovie.app.
Note that titles you and a partner both liked are part of that shared duo. Deleting your account removes your side of it.
Your rights
Wherever you live, you can ask us for a copy of your data, ask us to correct or delete it, or ask for it in a portable format. Email support@pickovie.app and we will respond within 45 days. We will not treat you differently for asking.
You can turn off push notifications, and revoke photo library access, in your device settings at any time without losing your account.
California
If you are a California resident, the CCPA as amended by the CPRA gives you the right to know what we collect and why, to delete it, to correct it, to opt out of its sale or of sharing it for cross-context behavioural advertising, and to limit the use of sensitive personal information. You cannot be charged a different price or given a worse service for exercising any of them.
We have never sold or shared your personal information, in the CCPA’s sense of those words, and we do not run behavioural advertising. The categories we collect are listed under What we collect above; the parties we disclose them to for business purposes are in the table under Who we share it with. To exercise any of these rights, email the address above. You may use an authorised agent.
Other states
Texas, Colorado, Connecticut, Virginia and a growing list of other states have their own privacy laws, each with its own thresholds for which businesses they bind. Rather than work out which ones currently apply to an app our size, we extend the rights above to everyone who asks, wherever you live.
UK and EEA
You additionally have the right to object to or restrict our processing, and to complain to your local data protection authority.
Children
Pickovie is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from them, as required by the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA). Onboarding asks for your age bracket, and anyone who selects “Under 13” is blocked: the anonymous account created on that device is deleted, nothing about them is kept on our servers, and the app records only a flag on the device itself so it does not simply ask again. If you are a parent who believes a child has given us data anyway, email support@pickovie.app and we will delete it.
Changes
If we change this policy we will update the date at the top of this page, and tell you in the app if the change is significant.
